'Captain America: Civil War' Review
Awhile back, I had the opportunity to attend the Atlanta premiere of Captain America: Civil War at the Fox Theater downtown. Needless to say, it was a fantastic event. If you haven't been to the Fox, the venue is absolutely beautiful and it would probably be impossible not to have a good time there, unless the show was the worse produced show in the history of mankind. With nearly 5,000 seats, the venue is huge and the ambience is perfect.
The film follows the same formula as most: lots of action, little story. Or, in this case, a fast-paced story that leads to action and various explosions immediately. As a fan, I can appreciate the action; but as a filmmaker, I'm always yearning for a good back story. If you're a comic book fan, however, the film doesn't disappoint.
The story begins with Captain America (Chris Evans) leading Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Falcon (Anthony Mackie), Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) on a mission in Nigeria, in pursuit of Crossbones (Frank Grillo) who has been making a run on various strongholds with no regard for human life. While our Avengers emerge victorious, it comes at a cost with innocent lives and the Nigerian President is killed. This sparks the rise of Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) who seeks revenge for the death of his father in the incident, and he eventually sides with Iron Man in this movie.
After the collateral damage caused in Nigeria, as well as previous efforts of the Avengers prove to be too much for the world’s governments, the United Nations comes together to introduce the Sokovia Accords, a resolution that will turn the superheroes into a task force supervised and directed by the UN itself. While Iron Man is on board with the new "regulations", Captain America is not; this causes a rift between the two and forces the Avengers team to choose sides. I won't spoil the story, but the fight scenes are definitely worth your money. Appearances by Ant Man (Paul Rudd), Spider-Man (Tom Holland), and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) further add to the excitement of the action sequences.
Although it is Captain America's movie, Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man always steals the show. His intensity and charisma are great and I would say he slightly outshines Captain America. This doesn't really take away from the movie, but it's kinda like pairing Anthony Mackie against Denzel Washington. As far as acting goes, you can tell Downey is the seasoned veteran here. Overall, it's a good, fun movie for the family, for a date, or just because.
